Algeria has as of 2009, 33 universities, corresponding to a university density of 1:1,030,000 inhabitants, placing Algeria as no. 16 of 22 in the MENA region.
In addition, there are 13 university centres, 13 national superior schools and 4 normal superior schools, altogether 64 institutions of higher education.
Out of the 33 universities, only 3 make it to the World Top 6000 list with Webometrics: Djillali Liabes University at no. 4116; Abou Bakr Belkaïd University at 4143; and University of Batna at 5548. In this respect, Algeria is with 9% of its universities on this list, ranked 14 of 22 in MENA.
Algeria scores modestly in the field of higher education. Density is low, and international ranking also low. In North Africa, Algeria scores right in the middle between the other countries.
