Through the 20th century, the population of Lebanon doubled 6 times. Lebanon was already in 1900 a country with a population density of almost 60 per km².
Today the population growth rate is a highly moderate 1.1% per year, something that is a reflection that fertility rates, at 1.9 children per mother, now are below the critical minimum to substain a stable population. A population is far from very young, with a median age of 29 years (it is 22 in neighbouring Syria), indicates that the process towards Western-style demographic mechanisms has been going on for a while. Still the birth rate is 2.5 births per 1 death case, from which the population growth comes. But with a median age on the increase, this too will even out. It seems likely that Lebanon within the coming 10-30 years will reach zero growth. Still, projections make the 2050 population reach 7 million.
More information of demography is found in other Lebanon articles about ethnic composition, first languages spoken and religious adherence. There is also information relevant to demographics under education and health.
