Universities

Iraq presently has 28 universities, corresponding to a university density of 1:1,030,000 inhabitants, placing Iraq as no. 15 of 22 in the MENA region.
As many as 9 are in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, 5 in Irbil, a city with about 1 million inhabitants. This reflects very much Kurdish efforts of establishing their new homeland.
No Iraqi university make it to the World Top 6000 list with Webometrics, which partly can be explained with the hardship the country has passed through since 2003, a time when many of the best skilled Iraqis have sought refuge abroad.
Being a country still at war, Iraq cannot be judged according to ordinary measures. The situation in the stable north, in Kurdistan, appears promising, although there is a clear danger of overstretch.
