Many of the leaders of the Gama'a l-Islamiya have declared that the killing of civilians no longer was accepted. This group has not performed any violent attacks since 1997.
Some of the "prisoners of conscience" were hardline Islamists, propagating an ideology that would have involved greater crimes towards Egypt's population if put in practice than what is practiced by the Egyptian government against them.
