Egypt has 34 universities, corresponding to a university density of 1:2,400,000 inhabitants, placing Egypt as no. 21 of 22 in the MENA region.
Half of the universities are private universities are indicated, all others are public. Egypt suffers from extreme differences in quality between institutions.
As many as 9 institutions make it to the World Top 6000 list with Webometrics: Cairo University is no. 1219 in the world; American University in Cairo 1334; Ain Shams University 2785; Mansoura University 2943. In this respect, Egypt is with 26% of its universities on this list, ranked 9 of 22 in MENA.
Higher education in Egypt scores moderately, while the country is quite capable of producing candidates that easily can find work abroad, efforts in establishing general high quality is yet to be undertaken. The extremely low university density must be considered with care, as Egypt has an overproduction of candidates with higher education.
