Ishak Pasha Palace, Agri, Turkey

Town in eastern Turkey with 70,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate), at an elevation 1,600 metres above sea level in the valley of Murat River, one of the tributaries to the Euphrates River. It is the capital of Agri province with 530,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
The economy is based upon trade in livestock and livestock products. Agri also benefits from the trade routes across the mountainous border zone between Turkey and Iran.
Agri has fair road connections with other centres of the region. Van lies 200 km south, Kars 250 km north and the border of Iran 150 km east.
The population is predominantly Kurdish.
Agri was formerly known as Karaköse, but has been named after Mount Ararat (Agri Dag), the highest mountain in Turkey with 5,165 metres above sea level lying 50 km east.
