Usak

City in central western Turkey with 140,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate), lying at an elevation of 900 metres above sea level. It is the capital of Usak province with 320,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
Usak's economy is most varied. Most dominant is the carpet industry where especially heavy-pile carpets are produced. There are also sugar refineries, production of cotton and woolen textiles as well as leather products. The agriculture of the surrounding are specializes in sugar beets and cereals.
Usak is well connected with other urban centres by rail and road. Afyon lies 150 km east, Eskisehir 250 km northeast while Izmir lies 300 km west.

History

2nd millenium BCE: The urban settlement of future Usak is part of the Hittite Empire.
1919- 1923: Some of the hardest fighting of the Turkish War of Independence is fought at Usak.
