Sharjah



City in the United Arab Emirates with 610,000 inhabitants, capital of the Sharjah Emirate, located on the Persian Gulf with a coast line of 16 km. Some estimates set the city population at 800,000.
Sharjah today largely serves as a suburb of neighbouring Dubai southwest along the coast; Ajman to the northeast is also part of this metropolitan area.
The main activities of Sharjah are commerce and administration, together with services. The city has two covered suuqs, traditional markets. Sharjah often makes a claim to be the cultural capital of the emirates, having several museums, galleries and theatres.
Before the discovery of oil, Sharjah town was among the largest and most affluent settlements among the emirates.
