Through the 20th century, the population of Qatar doubled 75 times, which is the highest for the MENA countries, and may well be the highest in the world.
Surprisingly, Qatar provides no statistics for the distribution between indigenous population and foreign workers, ethnic estimates land on about 170,000 Qataris in this country of 830,000 inhabitants. If these figures are correct, the population doubled 17 times from 1900 to 2000, which is less dramatic than 75, but still one of the fastest growing in the world. It seems like there may have been some immigration of peoples kindred to the original Qataris, contributing to the fast growth.
The greatest increase in foreign population happened from the 1960's until the 1980's, growth comes to a hard end in the 2000's. As of 2009, annual growth is down to 1.0%, reflecting a combination a moderate fertility rate at 2.5 children per mother and a high median age at 31 years. The migration waves have reversed, there is now a net negative immigration, although still very small.
Projections take into consideration that population growth seems to be stabilizing, and Qatar's 2050 population is calculated to become around 1 million.
