Overall, higher educaiton in Syria is far behind neighbouring countries, a legacy of the former regime of Hafez al-Assad. The regime of his son, Bashar al-Assad, has launched reforms that may within a few years make Syria score better internationally. Before any such effect takes place, Syria is the second-worst performer in the field of higher education in the Middle East, only Yemen is behind.
