The military coup of 2005 resulted in the release of several political prisoners. Still, recent reports from Amnesty International tell about state torture in the country, in which expertise from Morocco has been used. Torture is used on all prisoners, ranging from Islamists to ordinary criminals.
Methods of torture include cigarette burns, electric shocks, sexual violence, the pulling out of hair and "Jaguar" – where the detainee's hands and feet are tied together and the person is suspended from an iron bar while being hit and tortured. Amnesty International December 3, 2008
