MEIDUM: Snefru's first pyramid attempt The collapsed pyramid at Meidum may be the first true pyramid in the world; its contender is the the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur. The pyramid was a refined mastaba, where the steps of the step pyramid were evened out. The few step pyramids of Ancient Egypt apparantly suggested an even greater shape; the dramatic simplicty of the non-stepped pyramid. The pyramid at Meidum was possibly built as a step pyramid but with an outer shell to create the image of a pyramid. For how long time it looked like a pyramid we don't know, but the shell did eventually fall off. Perhaps the architects knew that the structure of this pyramid was inferior; Snefru is accredited with two more attempts of creating a true pyramid (both at Dahshur), and the third time he did succeed. But even if it did partially disintegrate, the pyramid at Meidum is quite impressive. It rises from the wide, flat ground with the steepest walls of any pyramidal structure in Egypt. No matter which way you arrive, you will have the experience of seening it grow in front of you, right until the point where you bend your neck so far back that you might fall over.
