Zanjan

City in northwestern Iran with 310,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate). It is the capital of the Zanjan Province with 970,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 21,841 km².
The economy is based upon the production of milled rice and flour, handwoven cloth, metalware and coarse carpets. Zanjan lies on the Teheran-Tabriz railway line.
The main attraction of the Zanjan region is in the village of Soltaniye. The Gombad-e Soltaniyeh, with its 51 metres tall dome, is the only remaining monument from the 14th century Ilkhan Mongol dynasty in Iran.
History
1978: Fighting between the locals and the Iranian army, a prelude to the Iranian Revolution.
