Capital of Kuwait with 2.1 million inhabitants (2005 estimate). The city of Kuwait is totally dominating the country in all cultural, political and economic fields.
Kuwait's economy is strongly dominated by oil distributions and exports. There is production of petrochemicals and other petroleum products. A spin-off of the oil industry has been that Kuwait has grown into becoming a thriving centre of trade and finance. Other products of Kuwait are prawns and pearls.
Kuwait University was founded in 1962, accompanied by several other institutions for higher learning.
Kuwait is one of the most modern cities of the Middle East, and the population is divided into three groups: Normal Kuwaitis, Kuwaitis with secondary citizenship and immigrant workers. It is only the first group that really enjoys the high living standards of the country. This is reflected in the settlements of the city.
