Ilam



From the region of Ilam

City in western Iran with 140,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), and capital of Ilam Province with 540,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 20,150 km².
Ilam is a poor city compared to other Iranian urban centres. Its infrastructure and architecture are modest. The economy is based upon production of bricks, woven cloth, coarse carpets and sack cloth. Its industries are mainly limited to a small thermoelectric-power plant. The economy of the surrounding region is based on the agriculture, producing barley, wheat, rice, oilseeds, potatoes and dates.
The population of Ilam is predominantly Kurdish, while the population of the province is dominated by Lurs. Most inhabitants are Twelver Shi'i Muslims.
