Damanhur
Arabic: damanhūr

City in Egypt with 260,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), in the western Nile Delta, along the Khanadaq Canal, leading water from the Nile. It is the capital of the Buhayrah governorate, with 4.9 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 10,129 km².
Damanhur is an important trade and administrative city for the northwestern Delta. The rich surrounding agriculture yields cotton, dates, cereals and a variety of vegetables. Industries are mainly involved with processing local agricultural products.
Damanhur is well-connected with other urban centres by road and rail, and even canal. It is on the Cairo-Alexandria main railway.
The name comes from the Ancient Egyptian Timinhor, meaning "City of Horus".
History
1302: Damanhur is severely damaged by an earthquake.
Late 14th century: The fortifications of Damanhur are rebuilt.
