Arak

City in western Iran with 410,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) at an elevation of 1830 metres above sea level. Arak is the capital of Markazi (Central) Province with 1.35 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 29,406 km².
Arak is the centre of an agricultural area producing cereals and fruit. Of industries, Arak has an ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol plant and production of aluminum products. Traditional products include fine rugs and carpets.
History
1808: Founded and called Sultanabad.
1930: Renamed into Arak.
