Adapazari, Turkey

City in northwestern Turkey with 280,000 inhabitants (2003 estimate), situated on a fertile plain west of the Sakarya river. It is the capital of Sakarya province with 760,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
The economy is based upon both local agriculture and industry. The industry produces sugar from beets, while the agriculture's main output is wheat, tobacco, fruits and vegetables.
Adapazari is connected by rail with the main Anatolian railway system, and is on the main highway between Istanbul and Ankara. Izmit lies 40 km west, Istanbul 140 km west, Ankara 300 km southeast, Eskisehir 200 km south and Bursa 150 km southwest. All are connected by both railways and road, except Bursa which is only connected by road.

Late 14th century: The region of Adapazari comes under Ottoman control.
Late 18th century: The city is named Adapazari.
