For long, local authorities pretended that this structure wasn't there at all, but with modern times Dougga's brothel has become one of the parts of Dougga that intrigues most visitors.
It is fascinating to see a brothel built so pragmatically and bluntly to service its function: An open court for courting, and rooms immediately in for the services. The building itself is sunk from the road leading to it, possibly allowing uncertain customers to withhold the women before entering.
The sign on the top photo is now openly shown by local guides, grinning and inspecting the variations of reaction.
