SOHAG
The Red Monastery

The Red Monastery is truly modest, being tucked in a village.
The monastery is attributed to St. Bishoi, who was a robber who became the disciple of St. Shenouda. The monastery was built some time in the 5th century.
The murals in the monastery church have murals dating back to the 12th century, while there is a fresco from the 10th century in a side altar. Upon my visit in 2005, thorough restoration work was being performed.
The monasteries are open 9.00-20.00, no entrance fee. It is located 4 km southeast of the White.
