Tetouan
Arabic: tetwān

City in Morocco with 320,000 inhabitants (2003 estimate).
Tetouan is situated slightly inland from the Mediterranean Sea, only 40 km east of Tangier, in the north of Morocco.
The economic base for Tetouan is trading of agricultural products, like grain, citrus fruit, livestock, crafts and vegetables. Industries of Tetouan produce cigarettes, soap, matches, flour, textiles and building materials.
History
14th century: Tetouan is founded.
Around 1400: Destroyed by Spain.
End of 15th century: Rebuilt by Moorish refugees from Spain.
1913: Tetouan becomes capital of Spanish Morocco.
1956: Independence of Morocco, and Tetouan becomes part of the new kingdom.
