Shuruppak

Ancient city of Sumer, Mesopotamia, located on the bank of the Euphrates river. The location corresponds to modern south-central Iraq.
Together with Nippur, Shuruppak was one of the main cult centres of the god Ninlil. Shuruppak is mentioned in Sumerian myths of the great deluge, older versions of the Epic of Gilgamesh.
Excavations have mainly unearthed well-built houses and cuneiform tablets, from late prehistory until the end of the 3rd millennium BCE. One conclusion of these finds was that Sumer had well-developed urban communities already around 3000 BCE.
