Shubra al-Khayma

Shubra al-Khayma, Egypt

Suburb of Cairo, Egypt, with the status of city, with 1 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and belonging to another governorate, the Kalyoubia. It lies to the north of the centre of Cairo. Its integration with Cairo is reflected by it often being omitted from country maps.
Shubra al-Khayma is today largely a residential and industrial area, dominated by poor quarters and suffering from heavy pollution. Industries are diverse, the major activities are with cotton ginning, production of textiles, industrial specialty glass and ceramic goods.
Shubra al-Khayma have a few institutions for higher education, although it mainly rests on the facilities in Cario. The Cairo Polytechnic Institute, founded 1961 is here, as well as a teachers' college.

History
1820's: Muhammad Ali establishes the first European-style factories of Egypt in Shubra al-Khayma.
