Oujda
Arabic: wujda

City in Morocco with 410,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), situated in northeastern Morocco, near the Algerian border.
It is the capital of Oriental region with 1.9 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 82,820 km².
The economic base of Oujda are communications, wine, citrus fruit, grapes, wheat, barley, vegetables, tobacco, sheep, wool and esparto grass; as well as lead, coal,and manganese. Oujda has a university, the Muhammad 1 University.
History
10th century: Founded.
1907: Occupied by the French.
1956: Moroccan independence.
