Abu Dhabi has been the capital of the emirate federation, since its foundation in 1971.
Abu Dhabi was founded in the 1760's and has been the seat of the rulers since 1795. The main sources of income of Abu Dhabi today is financial activity, transportation and communications — most of it connected to the extraction of petroleum in the Emirates.
Abu Dhabi has an international airport, and a deep water seaport, a result of large scale construction work. Of the industrial output of Abu Dhabi, steel pipes and cement are central. The city of Abu Dhabi has seen rapid growth during the last 30 years after oil was discovered in the 1950's.
Most of the houses of Abu Dhabi belongs to the time after the oil discovery. The centre of Abu Dhabi is dominated by the 7 km long seafront boulevard.
