BASICS

Sudan has good mobile coverage these days. There are two operators, MobiTel and MTN Sudan. GSM coverage is found in all major cities down to Malakal. This means that there is no mobile coverage in Juba and the southern parts at all.
Among popular destinations, Napata and Karima has no coverage. Dongola, further down the Nile, is the northernmost area with GSM coverage.
Prices are high, around €2.50/minute, but this depends on your subscription deal. Apparently MTN Sudan is not operative for all foreign users, but this may well vary depending on your provider's agreements.
Normal telephone services are available everywhere, and of course, vital to areas without GSM coverage. Calling international is not particularly cheaper than mobile use.
Internet cafes are becoming increasingly popular and common around Sudan. Easy to find in the larger cities, many medium-sized towns and smaller places have no Internet café at all. Prices tend to be reasonable, but do not expect broadband speed.
Post services in and out of Sudan are slow. Be careful about arranging for things to sent for you, and post your postcards as early on your stay as you can. Otherwise, you may be home before the postcards.
