BASICS:
Shopping

Buying in Sudan is easier than many other Arab-speaking countries. The indicated price is usually equal to, or not very far off, the real price. The very best market in Sudan is in Omdurman, across the river from Khartoum.
Buying Sudanese stuff is obligatory, I would say, Sudan being such an exotic and fascinating place. More than in the countries further north, Sudan is a place for local products. Souvenirs from one region may well be unavailable not far away.
Robes are popular, and become popular home dresses. White jallabiya or men and brightly coloured tobe for women.
Jewellery of Sudan varies much between the different nations. It may well be too much for many tastes, but this is a type of product that sees its value increase once you're back in your own country.
Other interesting products are daggers and swords, as well as carved wood and painted leather.
Many shops sell animal products for which you should be careful. Many products are from endangered species, like elephants, then with ivory products.
