Suleyman Pasha Mosque

Cairo, Egypt: Suleyman Pasha Mosque

This was the first mosque built by the Ottoman rulers, and it dates back to 1528. It is located to a gardens in a cramped corner of the Citadel. Its design is fully Ottoman, with one exception: the entrance leads directly into the prayer hall, not a courtyard. This was because of too little space here.
The decorations are among the finest of any mosque of Cairo from this period. The mihrab is covered with marble, illustrating the influence from art of the preceding Mameluke dynasty.
