Blue Nile near Wad Madani.

City in western Sudan with 370,000 inhabitants (2009 estimate), capital of the Al-Jazira state with 3.6 million inhabitants (2008 estimate) and an area of 23,400 km².
It is located on the west bank of the Blue Nile river, at an elevation of 410 metres.
Agriculture is the central economic activity, specializing in wheat, peanuts, barley and livestock. Headquarters of the Irrigation Service are located here, too.
Wad Madani is one the most modernized urban centres of Sudan, second only to Khartoum.
It is located on the Khartoum-Port Sudan highway. Khartoum is 140 km northwest, Ad-Duwaym 140 km southwest.
Wad Madani is a popular national destination for holidays and honeymoons. The beaches across the river are among the finest in Sudan.
University of Gezira was founded in 1975.

History
1821: Wad Madani is turned into an Ottoman-Egyptian military headquarters, from where the Funj kingdom at Sennar is conquered.
Early 20th century: Gezira project launched by the British to modernized Sudanese agriculture.
