City in central Saudi Arabia with 135,000 inhabitants (2009 estimate), in Qassim region.
Local agriculture specializes in leeks and dates. Wheat and barley are also of much importance. Other products include grapes, grapefruits, lemons, mandarins, oranges and pomegranates. Since 2004, a date festival is held at Unazyah around the month of September.
Unayzah is located to Najd, north of the long Rumma valley. To the north and west, begins the sand desert. Winters come with some rain, summers are very hot but with low humidity.
Unayzah has developed into a popular tourist destination for Saudis. Locals of Unayzah call their hometown "Paris of Najd", reflecting its alleged cosmopolitan character.
Unayzah is well-connected with other urban centres by highways. Province capital Buraydah is 30 km north, Riyadh is 300 km southeast.

History
Early 1st millennium CE: Unazayh is believed to be inhabited.
7th century: Emerges as an important stopping point for pilgrims from Iraq and Iran to Mecca.
1818: The Al-Sulaym family takes control over Unayzah; this is still the most powerful family today.
