Arabic: sharīf

In Islam, a honorable designation of at least 3 meanings.
- A common meaning is to designate a tribal leader.
- A more formal meaning is to designate descendants of Hassan, son of Ali and grandson of Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
- Sharif has been used as the formal title of the ruler of Mecca between 1201 and 1925.
In modern Islam, the king of Morocco, Muhammad 6 rests much of his authority in the claim of being a true sharif in the second meaning.
