Assyria of Shalmaneser 5

(Dead 773 BCE) Ruler of Assyria 783-773 BCE, 10 years.
He was preceeded by his father, Adad-nirari 3, and was succeeded by his brother, Ashur-dan 3. His reign was one of disintegration of the empire, a situation that gradually worsened under the reign of his father. He may well have been a puppet ruler, outmaneuvered by the commander-in-chief of the army, Shamshu-ilu, who emege from contemporary inscriptions as the strong man of the era.
During his reign, several military campaigns were sent against Urartu to the north.
