Ramses 9
Other spellings: Rameses, Ramesses
King of Ancient Egypt (1126- 1108 BCE), the 8th ruler of the 20th Dynasty. His name was not Ramses. This was a name/title he took when assuming power.
The power division which had come during the reign of Ramses 4, in which the high priest of Amon at Karnak controlled large lands and taxation continued through the reign of Ramses 9. In fact, Ramses 9 could only be considered to have had full power over northern Egypt. High priest Amenhotep had himself presented as an equal to the king on two reliefs at Karnak.
Egypt became increasingly instable during his reign. The government suffered from a lack of tax income, making it difficult to pay public servants. Grain prices were high, indicating poor conditions for agriculture, and perhaps great corruption among officials.
Another threat came from invading Libyans, but their main advances were into southern Egypt. Ramses 9 was still able to control Egyptian interests in Nubia.
