King of Ancient Egypt (1295- 1294 BCE), founder and 1st ruler of the 19th Dynasty.
Ramses himself was of a non-royal military family in the Nile Delta. Little is known of his specific acts, except that he was a commander under the former king, Horemheb, who is supposed to have chosen him as his successor since he had no sons of his own. Ramses was by then an old man, but he had a son, Seti, who could secure the order of succession, and thereby the stability of the state.
Not long after ascending the throne, Ramses did make his son coregent. Seti dealt with foreign matters, primarily with the planning of a campaign against Syria.
Ramses 1 completed the colonnaded hall in the Temple of Amon at Karnak.
After ruling for only 16 months, Ramses was buried in a small and poorly decorated tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
