Language spoken by the Toucouleur and Fulani, classified as a Fula language (together with Fulfulde and Pular). It is one of the official languages of Mauritania, and is also spoken in other West African states like Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Mali.
There are 3.7 million speaking Pulaar (2006 estimate), in Mauritania 320,000 (2009 estimate).
It belongs to the same family as Wolof.
Presently, Pulaar is written with modified Latin script, but there are many cases of it being written with Arabic script.
