It is about 290 km long along an arc west to southeast. At its largest it is 225 km wide, a total of about 100,000 km².
The desert is fairly well delineated, the sand dunes end in most regions towards the sandy terrain. Along its southern line, there are inhabited oases. The city of Ha'il (250,000) represent the largest border settlement to the Nafud.
The Nafud is known for its harsh winds, which cause a crescent for the dunes here.
