King of Ancient Egypt, the 5th king of the 4th Dynasty of Egypt, ruling 2532-2503 BCE, 29 years.
Menkaure was the son of King Khafre, and he married his sister Khamerernebti 2.
As with most other rulers of this era, we know little of his actual reign. He is reported by the Greek historian Herodotus to have been a just and pious ruler.
Menkaure is famous for having built the 3rd (and by far, smallest) of the pyramids at Giza. The pyramid had to be completed by his son, Shepseskaf. The intended casing in granite was never completed. Despite the pyramid's relatively small scale, it is here that some of the finest sculptures of this period were found, showing Menkaure and his wife-sister.
He was preceded by his father, Khafre or an unknown king, and succeeded by Shepseskaf.
