Religious freedom

Islam is a very strong force in Libya, and there has been a move towards conservativism in recent years.
Christians, who are largely foreign workers, are permitted to build and run churches and worship openly.
Missionary activity
Conversion from Islam is illegal, and punished with death. As is the regulation of Sharia, Muslim law, if a convert returns to Islam he or she will be aquitted. In a case of 2002, 14 students were sentenced to death for becoming Christians, but released after claiming to change their minds.
