Cities and Towns

The figures given by LookLex are estimates, and heavily rounded off. Accurate population figures presented by many other sources are deceptive and suggest a level of accuracy that does not exist. With few exceptions, urban population figures are no more than advanced guesswork.
Different countries count urban population according to varying methods. In many cases there are no official figures, there may never have been a proper census. There exists no consensus about how to define a border between neighbouring cities, nor to define city borders to a surrounding rural region. City populations are in some cases the population of a municipality, but municipalities can be smaller than the city proper, or they may include vast rural areas.
LookLex definition of a city or town requires continued settlement, and defines the border between neighbouring cities to be the administrative border, a river or a major highway. Our primary source for population data is City Population, but LookLex assess each figure, and in 5 to 10% of the cases we make a different estimate.
