While the health services of Lebanon are in a sad conditions, the education is of high quality. Even if most Lebanese have access to health services, the country is down to one doctor for each 10,000 inhabitant, which is extremely low. The country has around 20 hospitals, which often function more as basic health stations. The low numbers of health personnel, is expected to increase with the return of exiled Lebanese.
Lebanese schooling system has been stamped by a de facto division between Christians, and Muslims. Schooling is not compulsory, even if it is provided for all. While almost all Christian children attend school, the story has normally been totally different for the Muslims.
Yet Lebanon has a literacy rate as high as 86%. Higher education in Lebanon is considered to be among the best in the Arab world, with the 5 of the country's 7 universities in Beirut. Apart from that there are universities in Jounieh and Tripoli.
