Queen of Ancient Egypt 1473-1458 BCE, 15 years, of the 18th Dynasty, and the only female pharaoh.
She was the daughter of Tuthmosis 1, and married to her half- brother, Tuthmosis 2. She ruled together with her husband until his death in 1479, when the son of Tuthmosis 2 and a concubine was chosen Pharaoh, with the name Tuthmosis 3.
As he was only a child, Hatshepsut took control, and had herself crowned Pharaoh in 1473. There are few accounts of great acts in her period, but she advanced commerce and building activity, and she had a great temple built at Dayr al-Bahri near Thebes (see picture).
Towards the end of her life, Tuthmosis 3 gradually started to retake control.
