City in northern Saudi Arabia with 240,000 inhabitants (2009 estimate).
It is well-connected with other urban centres by highways, Riyadh is 480 km south, the border to Kuwait is 90 km northeast and the border to Iraq is 70 km north.
History
Around 640: Several wells are located to the region, making it the main stop for Muslim pilgrims coming from Iraq to Mecca.
Around 1900: The wells begin to dry up.
