City in Turkey with 275,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate), situated a few kilometres inland from the Sea of Marmara, in the Kocaeli Province.
The economic foundation of Gebze are modern industries, profiting from the proximity to Istanbul and the port of Eskihisar.
Gebze is excellently connected to other urban centres of Turkey by rail and highways. Istanbul is 45 km west, Izmit 60 km east.
Gebze is a well-planned city dominated by typical Turkish houses with red slanted roofs.
Right south of Gebze lies the scant ruins of ancient Libyssa.
