Beja
Also called: Bedawi; Bedawiyet; Bedauye; Bedawiye; Bedja; Tu-Bedawie


Afro-Asiatic language spoken by the Beja people in Sudan and Egypt, as well as in Eritrea, altogether ca. 2 million; 1.7 million in Sudan and 106,000 in Egypt. It belongs largely to the Red Sea region.
Many scholars question its classification, whether or not it is a Cushitic language.
There are writing systems for Beja, both for Arabic and Latin scripts.
The main dialects are: Hadendoa; Hadareb; (Hadaareb), Bisharin (Bisariab), Beni-Amir.
They call their language themselves To Bedawie.
