King of Ancient Egypt, 3rd ruler of the 12th Dynasty, ruling 1911-1877 BCE, 34 years. He was the grandson of Amenemhet 1.
Amenemhet was co-regent with his father the 2 last years of his reign. During this period he lead a gold-mining expedition into Nubia. He would continue with expeditions into neighbouring countries during his own reign. The furthest expedition was to Punt on the African coast south of the Red Sea. Statues of him have been found in Syria, but there are no indications that he himself led any expeditions or campaigns into this region.
There are few reports of him conducting important development projects or administrative reforms in Egypt. One of few exceptions was the widening of the canal from the Nile that irrigated Fayoum. All indications prove that his reign was generally peaceful and stable, allowing significant trade and artistic endeavors.
As had become common practice in the 12th Dynasty, Amenemhet made his heir, Sesostris 2, co-regent around the time when he had ruled for almost 30 years. The co-regency would last 5 years before Amenemhet died, and Sesostris became the new king.
He had his pyramid built at Dahshur, but its construction was of inferior quality. Today it appears as little but a mound that is easy to miss in this area of great pyramids dating back to Snefru.
