Adiyaman
City in southeastern Turkey with 200,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate), located in a valley in a mountainous region. It is the capital of Adiyaman province with 620,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
Adiyaman is the centre of an agricultural region, specializing in cereals, tobacco, cotton, pistachio nuts and grapes.
A large part of the inhabitants are Kurds. There has been a substantial influx of displaced villagers following the construction of the Atatürk Dam, 40 km south of Adiyaman.
HISTORY
8th century: Founded by the Umayyads close to the ancient city of Perre, and called Hisn Mansur.
Around 800: Fortified by the command of Harun ar-Rashid to become the chief military and strategic city of the region.
End 14th century: Incorporated into the Ottoman Empire. Its Turkish name would become Hüsnümansur.
1926: Renamed as Adiyaman.
1954: The Adiyaman province is established, with Adiyaman as capital.
